Charles Moore Paper

I enrolled in the School of Architecture’s Interior Design History II course to fulfill both the Portfolio in Museum Studies requirement, and enhance my interior design expertise of the specific time period covered during the semester (Neoclassicism to Postmodernism). We explored prevailing design philosophies and the relationship of interior design to architecture and the broader social context, including economic and social influences. I further developed my visual vocabulary of interior design, including interior spaces, furniture, architectural details, and decorative arts objects.

We worked in small groups to create an exhibition catalog where we focused on a specific time period, style, or theme. Our group chose Postmodernism, through the lens of Charles Willard Moore, and we each wrote a chapter for the paper. Moore was a prolific architect, writer, and educator and faculty member of UT’s School of Architecture before he passed away. We are lucky to house his amazing archive at the Alexander Architectural Archives in Battle Hall.

We each chose a residence Moore designed and called home; I wrote about his famed Sea Ranch condominium in Northern California, as well as the catalog introduction.
